Ayn Rand at Saddam's Palace

Here I am placing the books sent by Robert Begley of the NY Heroes Society on the bookshelf at the palace. I also have added books by Edward Cline, Cox and Forkum, Andrew Bernstein and the Arabic translation of the U.S. Constitution sent to me by Steve Saaf.

Thanks everyone!
Joe

Way to go Joe! One must have Atlas Shrugged as a basic tome on every bookshelf. My tome is dog-eared from multiple readings.

Saddened by the thought that there are actually people out there that are stifled by objectivism. One can only hope that their paradygms are broadened and their horizens lifted to a more complete reality of eternity. Why do you insist upon the limited perspective of Ayn Rand? Objectivism is and always will be a tool and only a tool by which the truth can be derived. Where did life come from? Can you answer that objectively? Ayn Rand could not! She always ran into the same false answer! Think about it. Research it to a logical and objective solution. IF you have the capacity that it takes to accept the truth that is! I challenge you! Don't stop your seeking for the truth! Why would anyone in their right mind stop at Ayn Rand? Why would anyone with the intelligence to use a tool think that the tool was the truth when in all actuality it is only a tool used by the truth to guide us to the truth?

Joe, Really enjoy your posts. Good to know there's at least one (and I'm sure there are more) "voice of reason" on the ground in Baghdad. There's a really big, mostly silent, majority here in the US that wants victory in Iraq. Keep kicking ass!

Not only have you made a difference in my life, you continually strive to make this world you came into a much better place. If you allow even one person there to hear the sounds of freedom, our separation will have been worth the trip. You kick ass at home and abroad. You are my hero.

That is beautiful! The New Intellectuals have made inroads in Baghdad. Who would have guessed? Any chance Atlas Shrugged is translated into Arabic? Cox and Forkum in the palace of a former dictator. Poetic Justice. Bravo.

Joe,

Knowledge is indeed a very powerful tool. The Arab world needs more Weapons of Mass Education. Thank you for delivering the most powerful weapon of all.

I wish you and your fellow soldiers continued success and keep up the good work.

Keep up the good fight. The bottom line is you and other like minded folk are addressing a real concern that is seeing far little press over here. And that, is giving the Iraqi people the knowledge to help themselves to advance beyond the self destructive rut their country's past politics and (current) religious doctrines have placed them.

Great to see the Navy over there doing its part providing the tools which will help bring about a positive change to a region long in need of same.

You have been added to my blog roll (such as it is).

And this retired ol' Squid wishes you Fair Winds and Following Seas throughout your current tour, and in all future endeavors.

What a great idea to get an Arabic translation of the Constitution. It would be wonderful if copies were available all over the Middle East, not just in Iraq.

I'm boggling at the thought of Ayn Rand's work being in one of Saddam's palaces. I'll pass that info along to David Kelley @ The Objectivist Center -- I know he will be delighted if he doesn't already know about you.

I would be pleased to send you copies of Reason magazine, if you would like them. My husband is Bob Poole, the official Founder of the magazine and of Reason Foundation, which publishes it and also runs a public policy think tank. If there are other books you would like, let me know and I will see what I can do. You can reach me @ LouV@reason.org.

I look forward to reading your posts and following the day to day from Iraq.

SpaceShipOne has flown it's 2nd trip and won the Xprize. This is a great day. Next prize is the Bigelow prize for orbital flight. And several other private groups are going to launch, despite having been beaten to the Xprize punch. It's not the money, it's the doing.

"There is no margin for error about a monstrosity that was created for the alleged purpose of preventing wars by uniting the world against any aggressor, but proceeded to unite it against any victim of aggression. The expulsion of a charter member, the Republic of China [Taiwan]—an action forbidden by the U.N.'s own Charter—was a 'moment of truth,' a naked display of the United Nations' soul. What was Red China's qualification for membership in the U.N.? The fact that her government seized power by force, and has maintained it for twenty-two years by terror. What disqualified Nationalist China [Taiwan]? The fact that she was a friend of the United States. It was against the United States that all those beneficiaries of our foreign aid were voting at the U.N. It was hatred of the United States and the pleasure of spitting in our face that they were celebrating, as well as their liberation from morality—with savages, appropriately, doing jungle dances in the aisles."

My name is Dennis R. Miller and I am a Canadian of a rare breed: I appreciate America's efforts to defend my liberty. I realize that America is trying to act in its own interests and this is morally right. However, I also realize that my country benefits from the American shield. Not many Canadians do. This is a sad indictment of Canada's public education system and the conscious attempt by the dominating leftist intellectuals of this country to distance our country from the ideals of the American Founders.

Be that as it may, I offer my gratitude to the courageous Americans who carry on defending their (and by extension my) freedom.

It is terrific that you guys are spreading the ideas of reason and freedom. I believe that you need the intellectual guidance that backs up your actions in order to achieve practical success; and so do those of the country you're occupying, if they wish to achieve a human level of existence.

If I may be so bold, let me assure you that those who support you still exist.

And thank you.

You who else thinks that they are perfect and infallible beyond any reasonable doubt? That's right, the Terrorists. Who are we to stand in their relentless pursuit of their vision, Mrs. Rand might ask.

ps. Don't forget, Roark was a terrorist too. Sadly.

dear ireadstuff,
You can find an answer to your question easily -- read Rand's work -- who are we to stop terrorists??? We are the motor of the world... the first country in history to embrace individual rights for ALL MEN who respect the rights of others.

And no, Roark was not a terrorist. If that is what you got from reading The Fountainhead (which, I'm not sure how you could have) than you have a long way to go. Good luck.
